In volume 16 (issues 61-64) we devote a whole issue to the fascinating story of Hitler's Reichs Chancellery in Berlin the lavish seat of government commissioned in 1938 and completed in just under a year, only to lie in ruins six years later. Inextricably linked to the story of the Reichs Chancellery is that of the Berlin Bunker the last Führerbunker situated beneath the garden where Hitler committed suicide in its concrete depths and his body and that of his wife of twenty-four hours, Eva Braun, were burned. After the Battle secured unique permission to visit and explore the bunker before and during its demolition by the East German authorities, recording for posterity the end of what must be the single most important relic of the Second World War. Another visit behind the Iron Curtain by After the Battle is presented in a major feature on Colditz Castle: taken over in 1939 by the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht as a prisoner-of-war camp, subsequently becoming a top security prison for persistent Allied escapers. On our visit we were allowed to re-trace the routes of some of the most famous escape routes and photograph the remaining traces to be seen in the castle today. The little-known campaign waged between Japan and the United States in the Aleutian Islands, off the inhospitable coast of Alaska is explored, as is the battlefield today, parts of which are still uncleared since 1943. After the Japanese invaders were defeated, the islands were significantly fortified, remaining occupied by the US Army until after the war, when all the materièl associated with them was left behind some to be cleared in the mid-1970s, the rest remaining for us to record in 1982. Additional features include an in-depth account of the battle for the Dutch town of Den Bosch in Holland; the devastating explosion of an ammunition-laden ship in Bombay harbour and the herculean efforts to clear the wreckage in one of the Allies most important ports; the touching account by a GI baby to trace her father, plus regular '50-years-on' features on events now history for half a century.
