SORRY - SOLD OUT
This 26th volume of After the Battle, comprising issues 101 to 104, sees the magazine under the guidance of a new Editor, Karel Margry, who has contributed three major features to this book. First in isssue 101 we explore the underground V1 and V2 factory at Nordhausen formerly in East Germany and inaccessible now being developed for visitors as the labyrinth of tunnels is opened up. Inside is a veritable treasure trove of V2s (as illustrated on our cover). In issue 102, Karel tells the story of the little Dutch girl who has captured the imagination of people around the world Anne Frank. Her diary recently re-published with revised text forms one of the cornerstones of Second World War's written history. Now Karel's comparison photography brings a spotlight on all the locations where she lived as they were and as they are today. The third story from Karel Margry's pen covers the battle for Cologne in March 1945. Although largely in ruins and empty of population after five years of bombing, the capture of this, Germany's fourth-largest city, was headline news for the Allies. Covered by numerous war reporters, the street-fighting inside the city produced some very dramatic combat images. Now, as we return to a rebuilt Cologne to retrace the American advance into the city, we discover it yields remarkable 'then and now' comparisons. The release of the Steven Spielberg film Saving Private Ryan broke new ground in the realistic recreation of D-Day and the Normandy battleground and a special feature covers all the locations used in the filming and explains how many of the scenes were shot. Other battles illustrated in our 'then and now' theme include Shaggy Ridge in New Guinea in 1943, St Sauveur-le-Vicomte in France in 1944, and the Road to Rangoon in Burma in 1945. Other articles include the wartime career of Lieutenant Henry Fonda; the discovery of a long-lost Dakota crash site in Burma; a 1942 Dornier crash in north-east England; two stories from 1940 the sinking of the German heavy cruiser Blücher in a Norwegian fjord and an action on the River Escaut which won the Grenadier Guards a VC and new light on the activities in Britain of the Soviet spy known as 'Sonia'.
